Pitchers and Catchers Winter Workouts
Coach McCarthy and a top-flight staff will lead ten, one-hour classes designed to get your pitchers and catchers ready for the upcoming little league season.
Pitchers — Our workout will consist of 10 high energy sprints, calisthenics, and stretching of the upper and lower body. We believe you should not throw until your body heats up, stretches and you break a sweat. Then we’ll work on each stage of the throwing motion and gaining flexibility for a long stride. We will make each throw focused on the precise technique we want to replicate in games. Then we’ll have each player throw to a catcher on 10 pitch cycles and every pitch will be charted to determine strike/ball ratio by the end of the camp.
Catchers — We too will make sure our bodies are ready to throw by doing high energy sprints, calisthenics, and stretching as well as lower half power exercises to help with blocking and moving in the crouch. We will learn the importance of soft hands and framing, proper throwing mechanics including gaining ground towards your target as well as proper arm slot. We will do blocking drills and work on deadening the ball. We will also catch live bullpens each week. Catchers will also learn in-game management and leadership from behind the dish.
*Note from Coach Mac: My goal is to teach young pitchers proven arm care and injury prevention drills, how to use their natural motion to throw more strikes with late movement, improve their fitness level, believe in themselves and take the mound with the deep inner belief they have prepared themselves to dominate every batter that steps into the box. I expect every pitcher to become literate in the mechanics of pitching and be able to self diagnose when control becomes and issue. Pitching is the most difficult and most valuable aspect of the game and must be learned and mastered with dedication, injury prevention and precision. My All Time Rotation: Satchel Paige, Greg Maddux, Wilbur Wood, Sandy Koufax and Dwight Gooden with a bullpen of Hoyt Wilhelm and Trevor Hoffman. Manager Tom Lasorda, Pitching Coach Jose Lima. Pitchers will be able to discuss:
- -Javelin Pose
- -Who is Dr. Frank Jobe
- -Why is late movement effective
- -5 key arm care drills to do at home
- -Inducing contact
