Coach in Training Program
Coach in Training (CIT) Program
Ages 13–14
Over 30 years ago, we created our Coach in Training (CIT) program with one goal in mind:
To develop the next generation of doers, motivators, and technical instructors — young leaders who bring hustle, heart, and humility to everything they do.
At Home Run Baseball Camp, CITs are treated like staff. Same shirts. Same bucket hat. Same morning staff circle. They coach during drills, hit fungos, throw BP, manage teams during games, pick up trash, drag and water the field, and—most importantly—learn how to motivate others.
This is where our future head coaches are made. In fact, almost all of our senior coaches and camp advisors started as CITs.
Resgister to be a Coach in Training
To be considered as a Coach in Training, please contact Coach McCarthy and provide:
Name

Camp Location you’d like to work
Weeks you’d like to work (Limit to 2 total for 13 yrs olds / 3 weeks for 14 yr olds and weeks do not need to be consecutive)
What Coaches in Training Can Expect:
Safety first. No compromise.
Respect.
Patience, support, and guidance from experienced coaches.
Clear communication and encouragement.
Real tools to do the job.
Breaks when needed.
Direct access to camp leadership.
Older coaches who want to help them succeed and earn promotion.
What We Expect From Coaches in Training:
Safety first. No compromise.
Be 15 minutes early, not just “on time.”
Look sharp — shirts tucked in, hats on straight.
Bring a positive mental attitude every day.
Put others first — teammates and campers.
Be curious about the craft of coaching.
Carry a notebook and pen.
Learn to MTFI — Make Them Feel Important.
Be willing to learn from mistakes and grow higher.
Consider leaving your phone at home (and bring a good book).
Show up because YOU want to be here, not just because your parents do.
What CITs Receive:
Staff mesh shorts
Several camp shirts
Bucket hat
Real responsibilities — and the trust that comes with them.
CITs need to bring their own lunch, and again — we recommend leaving the phone at home and packing a book. (Bench TikTok. Get Hemingway in the lineup.)
Camp Schedule for CITs:
7:45 AM – 3:45 PM, full day, Monday through Friday.
(We understand summer school or doctor’s appointments — just communicate with us. Otherwise, full-time presence is required.)
Important to Know
No cost to participate. Just register through a parent or guardian.
Space is limited, and we receive more applications than we can accept each week.
Baseball experience and being a Home Run Baseball alum help — but aren’t required.
What matters most? Hustle. Genuineness. Optimism. Blue-collar work ethic. Social skills. Reliability. Sense of humor.
If you’re only half in — this isn’t the right program.
But if you’re all in? Welcome to the team.
From the Director
"I’ve been fortunate to train as a guest coach with the Seattle Mariners minor league spring training, the Dodgers Academy in the Dominican Republic, the Chiba Lotte Marines in Tokyo, the Mets and Yankees grounds crews, and the Cuban National Team in Havana. In each of those places, I was welcomed with respect and friendship — and I pass that same spirit on to every Coach in Training who joins our team."
– John McCarthy, Director
Parents & Guardians — Come Watch!
You’re always welcome at the park to see your son or daughter coach ‘em up. Tell them I invited you.
