Baseball, Friendships, Service, Culture - Homerun Baseball in the Dominican Republic Dominican Republic President’s Day Trip 2015

Home Run Baseball Camp has had a 16+ year long relationship with the Dominican Republic and the town of Consuelo.  Coach Mac first visited Consuelo in March of 1999  when he was invited by Conseulo’s resident Peace Corps volunteer to help run a baseball clinic.  He immediately fell in love with the town and it’s residents, and befriended the Grey Sisters and former Major League shortstop Jesus “Pepe” Frias. The relationship eventually blossomed into the formation of Beisbol y Libros, a co-ed afterschool program that promoted literacy through baseball.  The program grew to include over 500 boys and girls.  Coaches RJ Johnsen, Dan Thorner, Michael Fabrikant, Emma Pope, Joe Graziano and others lived at various times in Consuelo and directed the program. Former Washington Nationals and Cleveland Indians Manager Manny Acta is also from Consuelo and his ImpACTA Foundation continues to do the work that Beisbol y Libros started many years ago.  We have partnered with his organization to continue to support baseball and literacy in Consuelo. In 2013, Home Run held its first ever weeks of Home Run Baseball Camp in Consuelo, Dominican Republic.  Families from our DC and NY camps flew down, stayed locally and spent the week playing baseball at the ImpACTA Foundation’s complex in Consuelo as well as visiting the town and learning more about life and baseball in the Dominican Republic, often referred to as the “eye of the baseball hurricane.”  We hope you are able to join us as we go back in February of 2015 for another week of HRBC Consuelo.
