What Sets Us Apart?

- Coach McCarthy is a nationally acclaimed youth coach and literacy teacher. He has been a focused, hands-on Director since 1994 and works with every group, every day, all summer. He personally trains each coach. Few camp Directors or youth coaches in the country have worked with more children from as many diverse backgrounds as Coach McCarthy has in the last 15 years. All three youth programs he created have been replicated in the US and the Dominican Republic.

- Coach McCarthy opens and closes camp each day with a short pep talk on subjects like sportsmanship, hustle, nutrition, developing a love of reading, self confidence, how to be a giver, not a taker, baseball history and keys to growing as a team player.

- Staff Loyalty and Experience
The Assistant Director, has been on staff for ten years and teaches at the elementary level at St. Albans during the school year. Dan spent over a year Directing Beisbol y Libros in the Dominican Republic. He helped manage a program for 400 boys and girls and a worked alongside a staff of 15 Dominican teachers and two Peace Corps Volunteers.

- Over 50 student athletes from John's programs have gone on to play college baseball and three have signed contracts with Major League Clubs and are currently in the minor leagues.

- Camper--to-Staff Ration
5:1 camper to staff ratio.

-95% of the staff are former campers.

- Pitching Machines
We feature two pitching machine games per day for ages 6-12. We pride ourselves on teaching hitting, throwing and fielding well and have one on one batting, pitching, infield and catching practice available all day with experienced coaches.

- We rotate defensive positions and encourage every camper to learn new positions.

- HRBC is located at Friendship Park- the best youth baseball fields in Washington.

About the Camp

Home Run Baseball Camp is designed for boys and girls ages 4-12 who enjoy baseball and want to improve their skills. Camp motto: "Talent is What You Have; Effort is What You Give" A player's enthusiasm and effort is more important than ability.

The camp focuses on developing a player's overall attitude, confidence, sportsmanship, treatment of teammates, respect for umpires and opponents, history of the game, hustle, composure, how to deal with the slumps and failures of the game, as well as other "intangibles."

The camp is located at Friendship Playground (aka "Turtle Park") at 4500 Van Ness Street NW (between Nebraska and Mass. Ave).

Coach Mac's Philosophy on Grouping

Coach Mac believes youngsters should be grouped by age and not ability. Players will change groups only if it is a clear safety issue that the child may injury a teammate. The group coach will make recommendations on a change.
